Professor S. Saito received a Bachelor of Medicine in 1980 from Nara Medical University, Japan, and a Ph. D. from Nara Medical University in 1985. During his postdoctoral period at Kyoto University Virus Center, he studied molecular biology and immunology, with a particular focus on cytokines. Since 1990 he has served as an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Nara Medical University. Since April 1998, he has been Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University. He is also one of the Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of Reproductive Immunology.
His research interests have centered primarily on understanding the immunology at the maternal and fetal interface with particular emphasis on the roles of cytokines and chemokines and the immune cells that produce them in reproduction and perinatal medicine.
He is also interested in regulatory T cells and regulatory NK cells, and he has studied the pathophysiology of preeclampsia, recurrent pregnancy loss, and preterm labor. He has worked at Toyama University Hospital as a clinician and has studied clinical investigation. In 2016, he was appointed as Director of Toyama University Hospital.
